When underground metallic pipelines are in close proximity to high voltage power transmission lines, they are subjected to the electromagnetic field created by the alternating current (AC).
Long term AC interference on a buried pipeline may cause corrosion due to an exchange of AC-induced current between the exposed bare metal at unavoidable coating defects in the structure and the surrounding soil.
